December Home Maintenance Blog

Posted: December 15 2022

The end of the year is here! December is an exciting yet busy month for most, from finalizing projects at work to getting all your holiday shopping and visits done. But, while you’re roasting chestnuts on an open fire, your home needs some love too during these colder months.

Our friends at Alberta New Home Warranty Program provided a December maintenance checklist for you to ensure your home stays in top shape.

Clean Furnace Filter

A dirty or plugged air filter limits airflow to your home's ducts. Inspect the filter and clean or replace on a regular basis throughout the winter months.

Balance Air Flow

If an area of your home is too cold or too warm, adjust the dampers in your heat register to increase airflow. Don’t forget about the heat registers located close to the thermostat — those are the most important!

Check/Test Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detector Batteries

We know we sound like a broken record, but the safety of your family is important! Check those batteries on your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to keep your family safe and your home sound.

Clean Range Hood Filters

Your kitchen’s range makes a huge impact on your home’s ventilation system! Clean the filter to remove odours and improve indoor air quality.

Clean Your Chimney!

And — last but not least — don’t forget to clean your chimney for any debris in time for the holidays! You don’t want to get Santa’s red suit all dirty.

This helpful checklist will help winterize your home and provide comfort all winter long. Want to know what Alberta New Home Warranty covers? Check out the warranty program here!

Are your windows fogging up, or is condensation getting into your home? Time to check your humidity! Find out what your humidity levels need to be for the season.

Happy December! Stay warm, merry and bright.
